Abortion — Including Medication Abortion — Is Still Legal in Wyoming

Thanks to ongoing legal action, abortion is still legal in Wyoming.  Wyoming’s near-total abortion ban which passed during the 2023 legislative session was in effect for three days in mid-March; then during a hearing on March 22, 2023, a district court judge agreed to issue a temporary restraining order barring enforcement of the ban for the time being.  Wyoming’s medication abortion ban which passed during the 2023 legislative session was scheduled to go into effect July 1, 2023; during a hearing on June 22, 2023, a district court judge agreed to issue a temporary restraining order barring enforcement of the ban for the time being.

A federal court ruling came out August 16, 2023, and could restrict access to abortion pills in the future — but nothing is changing yet.  The ruling is likely to be appealed to the Supreme Court and will not take effect while litigation continues.  If the ruling does take effect, it would place restrictions on medication abortion, such as requirements for in-person visits.  However, for now, both mifepristone and misoprostol remain available for medication abortion in Wyoming.
